The Swabian-Angevin Fortress



On the highest hill of Lucera, strategically located in the control of the surrounding area, rises prominently Swabian-Angevin Fortress.
Frederick II, who was moved to Lucera, between 1223 and 1233, consisting of nuclei restless population of Saracen Sicily creating a Muslim colony in the heart of the captains.
To mark with its strong presence in Lucera, the emperor built his Palatium in 1223. Charles of Anjou, defeated the Swabians, the building incorporates a new defensive circuit in Frederick, turning the castle the royal residence in a veritable fortress.
Thus arose a massive walls of about 900 meters, reinforced by 22 towers, rendered inaccessible by a deep ditch at the end of which stand two superb round towers: the tower of the king and lion or the tower of Lioness or the Queen, who looks even the original battlements.
